Homes in Antrim, and what that means for your bathroom
- Designated a new town in 1966 and planned to grow from about 7,300 people to 30,000, so many homes date from the late 1960s and 1970s.
Houses built quickly in the 1960s and 70s can have poor insulation, thin partition walls and dated wiring. Check the walls and floor when the old room is stripped, and consider insulating while the walls are open.
Newer houses are usually square and level, which keeps fitting quicker and cheaper.
Building control in Antrim
Replacing a bathroom like-for-like doesn't usually need approval. You will need it to add a toilet or bathroom where there wasn't one, to alter drainage, to make structural changes, or to install or replace a boiler.
Antrim is covered by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council building control.
